Welcome, President Elect

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

History has happened.

On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama was elected president.

I was watching the polls all day.  Somewhere around 8:30 pm, I told my husband, scarcely believing it, “Oh my God, James, I think he’s going to take it.”

Half an hour later, we hear gunshots right outside of our house.  Several.  We both hit the ground, and James called 911.  We were both scared half to death.

The operator on the phone asked, “Um, are you sure it’s not just people celebrating?”

Huh?  (Records scratch, silence for a moment)

Oh.  Yeah.  HUGE blond moment despite our dark hair.  We turned on the TV just in time to hear John McCain’s concession speech!

I felt choked up, overwhelmed, listening to John McCain, and an overwhelming sense of American pride as Obama hailed the crowds with the most incredible speech I’ve heard coming from a president in 8 years.  And for the first time since I have been allowed to vote in a presidential election, the president I voted for won.

Finally, the Bush regime is coming to an end.  Finally.

Our country is in a horrible economic crisis.  Jobs are being cut at extreme rates.  Bush is leaving us with a mess of a war with no end in sight and no valid reason as to why he ever invaded Iraq in the first place.  Gas prices are $3 more/gallon than they were when he took office.  America is at the butt of jokes all around the world because of who is representing us.

I actually like McCain.  I think he’s a good man with the best of intentions.  But I just don’t agree with him on the issues that I care about the most.  I felt bad for him during his concession speech, but thrilled that Obama took the race by a landslide.

President Barack Obama.  Please, please deliver the change we need.  Help us turn this mess of a country around.
