Colors of My Childhood

After beginning the day with the extra-early Easter Mass to avoid the crowds of snowbirds (who don’t know how to park to save their lives) at church yesterday, we celebrated the rest of the holiday at my parents’ house .

While I am not at all, and never have been, a fan of living in the desert (and consequently am trying to get the hell out of this place), I will admit that Tucson has some incredibly redeeming qualities.  Particularly at my parents’ place, where they live on a large plot of land surrounded by natural desert.

Unless you are from the desert, how else on earth would you know that tree trunks can be green?

Or that Saguaros are so tall?

Who knew that pomegranates could grow here, or that they start out as such brilliant blossoms?

Did you know that spines can be beautiful?

Why would I ever need to buy aloe vera in a bottle when they grow like weeds here?

Did you know that the Easter Bunny hides eggs in the desert, too?

Who knew how much fun one could have playing on the floor?

And did you know we eat Jelly Beans here, too?

While I have no intention of growing roots that last much longer in this place, I made a point to take the time to enjoy the fact that I am here right now.

There are certainly things I like about it here.

Family being the best part, of course.  But the quiet, beautiful moments filled with cool breezes and doves cooing and the desert blooms of Spring are definitely incredible pieces of the puzzle that has made up my life thus far as well.

I just don’t think I would be who I am now if I hadn’t grown up here.

Aaaaahh- I HATE the doves! They sound like broken records this time of the year (somebody lay that damn bird, she’s horny!)… and when they start cooing I know I have to get up for work soon :-\ The rest of the desert ain’t so bad, my nieces are the best part though :-D

Seeing you talk about Arizona makes me realize just how many things Florida has in common. Except we have stupid gators that like to eat children and small dogs. Glad you had a good Easter.
