A Poll: Vaccinations

Oh yes, you knew I’d get to this one eventually.  What’s a good hot topic if you don’t acknowledge its presence?

Would/Will/Did you vaccinate your child/ren?

I am allowing voters to choose up to two different options because I know that sometimes you change your mind when you have more than one kid.

Play nice, no attacking other readers for their answers, and I promise to weigh in on my personal beliefs regarding vaccines in the near future.

When Sam started loosing language at 18 months I started worrying about Autism. Our pediatrician (who was my pediatrician) said that he was fine and don’t worry about it. He also assured me there is no mercury in the vaccines.
In the past week or so I have been reading Jenny McCarthy’s books about vaccines. I have learned a lot…all things I wish MY pediatrician would have told me instead of me having to go out and read it myself.
According to Jenny’s book there is now aluminum in most of the vaccines which can also cause a build up of metals and cause problems. But the most significant thing that was noted is the fact that most kids start problems after the MMR and the chicken pox vaccines. Those are the vaccines with the live virus in them. The point made in the book is to:
    1) Never get your child vaccinated if there are or were recently sick. Let their immune system build back up
    2) Every body is different. These vaccines are made for the masses and not the individual child. The belief in the book is that some of these kids’ immune systems are not that great and when they get the live viruses it wreaks havoc.
    3) This was the biggest thing I took away from the book. In 1983 we were vaccinated with a total of 10 shots…that’s it. In 2009 we vaccinate our children with **26**!!!!! Maybe that’s why Autism is now 1 in 150 and 1 in 94 for boys.

I don’t know if this is what you were referring to Tamra…but that’s my soapbox speech.

We started with the Dr. Sears vaccination schedule, because I was torn between the Naturopath side of me that says we should allow natural exposure to disease, and the public health advocate that says it’s irresponsible and unsafe to depend on herd immunity. However, after 4 months of monthly pokings for little Wyatt, we reverted to something like the regular vaccination schedule. I still decided to delay Hep B until he’s a teenager (by which time I hope Gardasil will be approved for boys because they get genital warts too!). I’m still undecided about Varicella, but will definitely do the MMR series. I wish I could separate them to reduce the amount of measles vaccine he’d have to be exposed to, but that’s not practical right now. The autism connection is a load of hooey, from everything of any scientific basis available. There are a billion other things in our world and medical system that have changed over the years which better explain the rise in diagnoses of autism. Just like I happily drink unfiltered tap water, I think vaccines are one of the greatest and life-lengthening advances we can be grateful for. I’m not about to turn up my nose at them.
